Equality Statement, Policy and Objectives
Equality Information 2026–2027
At Brierley Primary School, we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, families and members of the wider school community. Equality is at the heart of everything we do. Through our values of Nurture, Aspire, Believe and Achieve, we work to remove barriers, promote inclusion and ensure that all children feel a strong sense of belonging and are able to achieve their full potential.
Our legal duties
Under the Equality Act 2010, the school has due regard to the need to:
eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
The protected characteristics named in the Equality Act 2010 are:
age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief
sex
sexual orientation
Our school context
Brierley Primary School serves a diverse community. The school has:
above average levels of disadvantage
above average numbers of pupils with SEND and EHCPs
high and increasing numbers of pupils with English as an Additional Language
high pupil mobility, including pupils joining mid-year
low starting points for many pupils, particularly in communication, language and independence
Many children enter the early years without key developmental skills such as independence, communication or self-care. Some pupils also join the school later with little or no prior formal education and with attainment significantly below age-related expectations.
Because of this context, the school places a strong emphasis on inclusion, early language development, adaptive teaching, strong relationships with families and widening pupils’ experiences and aspirations.
How we promote equality
The school actively promotes equality across all protected characteristics. We challenge discrimination wherever it occurs and foster a culture of respect, understanding and inclusion. Diversity is recognised and celebrated as a strength within our school community.
We promote equality through:
high-quality adaptive teaching
a strong focus on language and vocabulary development
targeted interventions and early support
inclusive curriculum planning
fair and inclusive behaviour systems
anti-bullying work
enrichment opportunities, trips and wider experiences
assemblies, curriculum content and events that celebrate diversity and promote understanding
close partnership with parents and carers
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils feel safe, valued and included, and that all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect.
Accessibility
The school is committed to making reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled pupils are not disadvantaged. We work to improve access to the curriculum, the physical environment and information.
Monitoring equality
The school collects and reviews information in order to monitor the impact of its policies and practices and identify any inequalities or barriers. This may include information relating to:
attainment and progress
attendance and persistent absence
exclusions and behaviour
prejudice-related incidents
participation in enrichment and wider opportunities
This information helps the school to review its provision, identify priorities and set equality objectives.
Prejudice-related incidents
The school is opposed to all forms of prejudice and discrimination. Any prejudice-related incidents are taken seriously, addressed promptly and recorded in line with Local Authority guidance. Pupils and staff are supported to understand the impact of prejudice and discrimination, and the school works proactively to prevent incidents from occurring.
Equality objectives 2026–2030
