How You Can Help Your Child
Throughout your child’s time in nursery it is hoped that you will continue to take on the role of your child’s primary educator. As soon as your child comes into the world, you are preparing them for the life they have ahead of them. Many of the skills required are not learned automatically and children need encouragement and practice to acquire them. As a parent you can work alongside nursery staff to help your child prepare for the formal learning of school.
Throughout your child’s time at Little Bears you will be invited to attend a variety of events, including online workshops, which will give you more ideas about helping your child at home. In the meantime, please feel free to speak to the nursery staff if you feel that you need more help with suitable activities at home.

Nursery Rhymes
Singing nursery rhymes with children is a fun and valuable way to support their learning and development. Through songs and rhymes, children build their language skills, improve their memory, and develop listening and communication skills. Nursery rhymes also encourage confidence, creativity, and a love of music, while providing opportunities for children and adults to enjoy learning together. In Little Bears we love our Little Wandle Rhyme time. Here is the Nursery Rhymes we will be singing and exploring throughout the year.
For parents | Letters and Sounds
Maths Activities
- Use flash cards with numbers 1-5. Show a card and ask your child to say the number. Then, encourage them to find objects around the house that match the number on the card.
- Write numbers 1-5 on pieces of paper and have your child match the flash cards to the corresponding numbers.
- Play simple counting games. "How many steps does it take to get to the kitchen?" or "Can you count how many books are on the shelf?"
- Go on a shape and number hunt around the house or garden. Look for items that match the shapes
Name Recognition
- Write your child's name on a piece of paper and cut out each letter. Mix up the letters and help your child put them back in the correct order.
- Write your child's name in large letters and let them trace over it with a pen or crayon. This helps them become familiar with the letters in their name.
- Write your child's name multiple times on pieces of paper. Mix them up with other names and ask your child to find all the cards with their name.
