School Sports Competition Reports 2025/2026

Another Fantastic Year of Sport at Brierley!

The 2025–26 academic year has been another fantastic year of sport at Brierley, with pupils across the school taking part in a wonderful variety of competitions, festivals and sporting events.

From football, hockey and netball to cricket, athletics, tag rugby and dodgeball, our pupils have represented Brierley with enthusiasm, determination and excellent team spirit. There have been some brilliant results along the way, but just as importantly, pupils have grown in confidence, developed new skills and supported one another every step of the way.

Autumn Term

Our sporting year began with the Year 5/6 Hockey Competition, where both Brierley teams performed brilliantly. The A team won five of their seven matches and missed out on qualification by just a single point, while the B team recorded four victories and grew in confidence throughout the competition.

Our Year 5/6 Tag Rugby team followed with a fantastic unbeaten festival, recording three wins and two draws. There was some excellent attacking play, determined defending and wonderful teamwork against some very strong opposition.

Football returned with the FA Kids Cup and our Autumn League fixtures. A new-look team showed plenty of promise and continued to improve as the term progressed. One of the highlights was an excellent league victory over Beechwood, alongside some very encouraging performances against strong teams from across the area.

Another autumn highlight was the Crewe Dodgeball Festival, where we entered three teams and gave many pupils the opportunity to represent Brierley in competitive sport. All three teams performed superbly, with the A and B teams enjoying particularly impressive winning records.

Our girls' football team also represented Brierley with great determination. Results did not always reflect the quality of their performances, but the team produced some excellent football, scored some lovely goals and gained valuable experience.

The term finished with the Sports Hall Athletics Competition, where an amazing 39 pupils represented Brierley across a variety of running, jumping and throwing events. Both our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams finished as runners-up, with lots of excellent individual performances contributing to a brilliant team result.

Spring Term

The Spring Term began in spectacular fashion at the Crewe Netball Competition.

Our A team produced a superb unbeaten performance to be crowned competition winners, earning a place in the Crewe & Nantwich Finals. To make the evening even more special, Brierley B finished as runners-up, completing a wonderful 1–2 finish for the school.

At the Crewe & Nantwich Finals, our pupils faced some of the strongest schools in the area and finished an excellent fourth overall. Reaching the finals was a fantastic achievement and a fitting reward for all of the hard work that had gone into training.

Our footballers also continued to develop during the Spring Term. A narrow defeat against a very strong Leighton team showed just how competitive the side had become, while the Timperley Shield saw Brierley recover from a difficult start to finish fifth overall.

The team demonstrated excellent resilience throughout the competition and ended the tournament with several strong performances and memorable goals.

Summer Term

The Summer Term was packed with sport, beginning with our Girls' Cricket Competition at Crewe Vagrants.

The girls had worked extremely hard in after-school practices and produced plenty of encouraging moments throughout the competition. There was some excellent bowling, determined batting and brilliant fielding, including some superb catches.

Their final match against Wistaston Academy was particularly exciting. After a slow start with the bat, some fantastic attacking play brought Brierley right back into the contest, with the team eventually falling just six runs short. Despite the results, the girls showed excellent team spirit and continued to encourage one another throughout.

Brierley Sports Day 2026

Sports Day was once again a wonderful celebration of sport across the whole school.

Our EYFS pupils started the week brilliantly, showing everyone how much they had practised and enjoying the opportunity to take part in their different events.

Years 4, 5 and 6 then travelled to the Cumberland Arena, where every child participated in six events: sprint, beanbag, relay, 400m, javelin and long jump.

There were some outstanding individual performances. K.P. collected four gold medals in Year 6, while E-M.E. also won four events. In Year 5, D.L. and P.G. each collected three gold medals, while L.K. achieved three golds and a silver. Years 4 also produced some excellent performances, with A.B., G.G. and D.L. amongst those collecting three gold medals.

Congratulations to Anderton, who were crowned our 2026 Sports Day champions, with Delamere finishing second and Jodrell and Tatton sharing third place.

Years 1, 2 and 3 completed the Sports Day celebrations later that afternoon, taking part in sprint, egg-and-spoon and beanbag races in front of a fantastic crowd.

A special mention must also go to our Year 6 House Captains, who were superb role models and provided invaluable help with the organisation of the events.

Town Sports 2026 – Field Events

Town Sports is always one of the biggest events in the Brierley sporting calendar, and once again our pupils rose to the occasion.

Our field-event athletes competed in javelin, long jump and high jump at the Cumberland Arena and produced some fantastic results.

There were top-three finishes across all three disciplines, including first places for D.A. in the Year 6 Boys' Javelin and W.H. in the Year 4 Girls' High Jump.

Other excellent podium finishes helped Brierley finish as RUNNERS-UP in the Group C Field Events — a brilliant achievement for the whole team.

Town Sports 2026 – Track Events

The second part of Town Sports took place at The Barony in Nantwich, where our athletes competed in front of a huge crowd.

Brierley enjoyed a number of podium finishes throughout the evening, including success in hurdles and sprint events.

Our first victory came when M.H. won the Year 3 Girls' Beanbag Race, before D.L. produced another fantastic first-place performance in the Year 5 Boys' event.

There was even more success for Year 3, with our relay team racing brilliantly to take first place.

The Year 3 team were ultimately crowned winners of their group, while Brierley finished fifth overall when the track and field scores were combined, narrowly missing promotion to Group B.

It was another fantastic display of determination from everyone who represented the school.

Boys' Cricket Competition

Our Year 5/6 boys' cricket team enjoyed an excellent competition at Crewe Vagrants.

They made a superb start, recording three victories from their first three matches, including impressive wins over Monks Coppenhall B, Sound B and Pear Tree.

There were some excellent batting and bowling performances across the team. P.G. top-scored with 23 runs in the opening match, while D.A. produced another superb batting display with 24 runs against Sound B.

After three consecutive victories, Brierley were firmly in contention for one of the two places at the Cheshire County Finals. Although two difficult final matches meant qualification narrowly slipped away, the team finished an excellent third overall in a competition played to a very high standard.

It was a tremendous achievement and reflected just how much the pupils had developed through their training and matches during the year.

Year 3/4 Diamond Cricket Festival

Our sporting year finished on another positive note when a team of 12 Year 3 and 4 pupils travelled to Crewe Vagrants for the Diamond Cricket Festival.

The children played five matches and recorded three excellent victories, defeating Monks Coppenhall A, Monks Coppenhall B and Stapeley Broad Lane.

Their two defeats were both very close contests, and throughout the day the team produced some explosive batting, energetic running between the wickets and some fantastic catches.

It was a brilliant way to bring another busy and successful sporting year to a close.

What a wonderful year of sport it has been!

From competition wins and runners-up finishes to first-time representatives and pupils discovering new sports, there has been so much to celebrate.

We are incredibly proud of every pupil who has represented Brierley this year. Whether winning a medal, scoring a goal, taking a wicket, completing a race or simply giving their very best for their teammates, every child has contributed to our sporting success.

A huge thank you also goes to all of the staff who have given their time to organise, coach and support our teams throughout the year.

Finally, thank you to our fantastic parents, carers and families for providing transport, supporting events and cheering our pupils on from the sidelines.
