School Uniform

At Brierley Primary School, our uniform helps children to feel a sense of belonging and pride in our school community and helps them to arrive ready for learning. We keep our uniform simple, practical and affordable. Wherever possible, items can be purchased from supermarkets, high-street shops or other retailers. We keep the number of items requiring the Brierley logo to a minimum and also provide access to pre-loved uniform. Please make sure that all clothing, coats, footwear and other belongings are clearly named.

Little Bears

Uniform is optional for children attending Little Bears. Children take part in PE and outdoor learning every day, so please make sure your child comes dressed in comfortable, practical clothing and suitable footwear that allows them to move, play and explore safely. Please also ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, as outdoor learning takes place throughout the year.

Reception Uniform

Children in Reception learn through active play and physical activity throughout the school day. For this reason, Reception children come to school in practical clothing based on our PE uniform each day.

Reception children should wear:

• Brierley blue jumper or cardigan with the school logo

• white polo shirt

• blue shorts, or navy/blue joggers or leggings

• white socks

• trainers.

For safety reasons, Reception children should not wear jewellery, including earrings.

Uniform for Years 1–6

Children in Years 1–6 should wear:

• Brierley blue jumper or cardigan with the school logo

• white polo shirt

• grey trousers, shorts or skirt

• plain white, grey or black socks or tights

• black flat-heeled shoes or completely black trainers, including black soles.

Jeans, leggings and tracksuit trousers are not part of the everyday school uniform.

Summer Uniform

During warmer weather, children may choose to wear a:

• blue gingham dress; or

• the usual grey trousers, shorts or skirt.

• The blue gingham dress is optional.

PE Kit – Years 1–6

Physical activity is an important part of children's health and wellbeing. On their designated PE days, children should come to school wearing their PE kit. Your child's class teacher will let you know which days their class has PE.

Children should wear:

• Brierley blue jumper or cardigan with the school logo

• white polo shirt – plain or with the school logo

• blue or navy shorts or joggers

• trainers.

A school-logo polo shirt is not required. A plain white polo shirt is perfectly acceptable.

Footwear

Children's footwear needs to be safe, secure and suitable for an active primary school day.

For Years 1–6, children may wear:

• black flat-heeled shoes or completely black trainers, including the soles.

Reception children wear suitable trainers as part of their everyday uniform.

Please do not send children to school wearing coloured trainers, heels, fashion boots or other footwear that is unsuitable for active play.

Jewellery, Hair and Nails

For health and safety reasons, jewellery should not be worn in school. If earrings are worn, they must be small, plain studs only. Children must remove earrings for PE and other physical activities. Staff cannot remove or store children's earrings, so children must be able to remove them themselves. We recommend having ears pierced at the beginning of the summer holiday so that there is sufficient time for them to heal before returning to school.

Long hair should be tied back for safety and hygiene.

Make-up, nail varnish, gel nails and false nails should not be worn in school.

Ready for the Weather

Children spend time outdoors throughout the year, so please make sure they are appropriately dressed for the weather.

During colder or wet weather, children should bring a warm, waterproof coat. During warmer weather, we recommend bringing a sun hat.

Buying School Uniform

We want our uniform to remain as affordable as possible for families. The Brierley jumper or cardigan with the school logo is our required branded item and can be ordered through the SchoolSpider app. Other uniform items can be purchased from any supermarket, high-street shop or other retailer, provided they meet the colours and requirements listed above.

Pre-Loved Uniform

We want good-quality uniform to be reused wherever possible. Brierley runs a termly pre-loved uniform shop, where families can access second-hand uniform. Please contact the school office for information about the next pre-loved uniform shop or if you are looking for a particular item or size.

Inclusion and Individual Needs

We want every child to feel comfortable, included and able to take part fully in school life. Our uniform is not defined by gender. We respect religious and cultural dress, including appropriate head coverings. If an adjustment to our usual uniform is needed for a medical, SEND, religious, cultural or other individual need, please speak to us. We will work with families to find an appropriate and supportive solution.

Help With Uniform

We understand that there may occasionally be difficulties providing the correct uniform. If you are having difficulty obtaining uniform or need support, please contact us. We will always try to work with families sensitively and find a practical solution.

Where a child arrives without the correct uniform, our approach begins with a gentle reminder and working with the family to resolve the issue, rather than creating an unnecessary barrier to learning.

Working Together

We ask parents and carers to help us by ensuring that children come to school in the correct uniform and that clothing is clean, clearly labelled and in good condition.

Our aim is not simply for children to look smart. We want our uniform to help every child feel:

confident • included • proud to belong • ready to learn.
