Year 2/3 is such a wonderful year at Brierley Primary School because we have lots of exciting learning opportunities planned for the children to develop and expand their knowledge and skills. This includes, travelling back in time to learn about the history of the local area, building our own toys, drawing book characters, fun science experiments and creating our own pieces of music.

During this academic year, pupils in Year 2 are required to sit their statutory end of year assessments. Throughout the year we will be learning new skills, in reading, writing and maths, to enable the children to take part in these assessments. Year 2 children will complete four assessments: Reading, Mathematics (Reasoning and Arithmetic) and Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar.

As a phase, we will be expanding our knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subjects. In writing, the children will be writing both fiction and non-fiction pieces and studying a variety of texts. In reading and writing sessions we will be reading a variety of different books including ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’, ‘Naughty Amelia Jane’, ‘The Tear Thief and ‘The Iron Man.’

During our maths sessions we will be learning new methods for both mental and written mathematics. There is a big focus on learning our times tables and being able to recall these facts quickly. We will be using Times Table Rockstars to practise.

Our curriculum sessions in the afternoon are always so much fun! The children become artists and learn how to sketch, paint and sculpt. They also become designers and design their own t-shirts. In science lessons we’ll be studying rocks, plants and materials. There’s also gymnastics and football in PE, composing rhythms in music and learning about the local area in geography.

There are multiple websites that your child could use at home and will be using within class:

Homework

Homework will be handed out on a Thursday in the children’s homework folders. This is to be returned the following Thursday unless stated otherwise.

There is also a variety of curriculum homework activities to choose from which are sent out on a three-weekly basis.

As well as homework, children are expected to read every night and have their reading diary signed. Teachers will be checking diaries each week so it is still important that these are signed. For any children who read at least four times per week, Dojos will be given out.

Reading in Year 2/3

Your child will bring home a reading book and diary.  We ask that our parents and carers find at least ten minutes each night to read with their child.  When your child reads at home, please sign their diary and ask them questions about what they have read to ensure a good understanding of the book.

General reminders for parents

  • Please make sure your child is wearing the correct, labelled uniform. This includes appropriate footwear. Please tie long hair back. Children are allowed to wear simple gold/silver stud earrings but they must be able to take them out for PE or have them removed before they come to school.
  • The children will be doing PE on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child comes into school in appropriate PE kit.
